CS371p Spring 2021: Erica Martinez

Long-term takeaways from this class:

  • when designing algorithms, demand the weakest iterators (e.g. bidirectional vs. random access)
  • when designing containers, provide the strongest iterators (e.g. random access vs bidirectional)
  • build adapters on top of containers
  • always look for reuse and symmetry in your code
  • collaboration is essential to the quality of your code and to your well-being in producing it
  • refactor, refactor, refactor
  • make your code beautiful

My Experience:

How well do you think the course conveyed those takeaways?

This course conveyed these takeaways extremely well. All the lectures go through each of these, one by one, and you get to practice them on the projects for this…

Week of April 12th — April 18th

What did you do this past week?

This week, I worked on an AI project that was due on Wednesday. Afterward, I focused on working on smaller assignments from my other classes to make sure that I was still on track to finishing the semester strong.

What’s in your way?

I don’t think I have anything in particular that is on my way. I still have to plan for my next semester, but I don’t think this will take too much time. I do have an AI project that I haven’t started due this Wednesday. So I guess I wish I had more time to work on things.

What will you do next week?

This week I…

What did you do this past week?

This week, I spent most days working on the Darwin project with my partner and I think we have made a lot of progress so far. We still have a few issues but I’m hopeful that we will fix them soon.

What’s in your way?

There are a lot of project that I have due next week, and I haven’t started one of them (nor I know the material for it). Also, I am running into quite a few confusing bugs in Darwin, so I have to spend time on that as well. …

What did you do this past week?

This past week, I worked hard on my AI project that was due on Wednesday. Afterward, I spent the rest of the week doing small tasks to keep me up to speed on most of my classes. I still have a few assignments to do to make sure that everything is up to date, but so far so good.

What’s in your way?

I’m starting to feel burnt out from all the work I’ve been doing. I should probably start taking a few more breaks in between, but I’m feeling a bit stressed whenever deadlines come up too fast.

What will you do next week?

Next week, I have a…

Week of March 11th — 28th

What did you do this past week?

This past week, I finished Allocator and studied for my AI exam. Even though spring break was a really good refresher, I wish I had done more work because I was pretty pressed for time during this week.

What’s in your way?

I feel like time is really the enemy for every single week, but I also have been falling behind on planning my weeks, so a lot of assignments are passing by me and I’m getting a bit overwhelmed. Hopefully, I can catch up a little bit before it starts getting worse.

What will you do next week?

Next week, I have an AI project due on Wednesday, so…

Week of March 1st — 7th

What did you do this past week?

This week, I had some trouble since I had 2 projects due this week. I submitted my AI project with about a day to spare, but I didn’t know that the OOP project was due on Saturday (I thought it was due on March 10th for some reason). Thankfully I got both of them submitted on time since I worked on both of them pretty hard.

What’s in your way?

Nothing major is in my way for this week. I just have to do a few assignments for other classes. …

What did you do this past week?

This past week, I finished Collatz and submitted my first AI project. It was a difficult week since things piled up really quickly but I’m glad it’s over for now. I also worked on rewatching some lectures that I had to miss, but I still have a few to recap.

What’s in your way?

Honestly, this cold is making my productivity worse. My workspace is right beside a window and behind my front door, so I get to still feel the cold. However, a warm cup of hot chocolate always makes it better. …

What did you do this past week?

This past week, I got all of my assignments ready to be done. I’ve been working on a variety of assignments little by little in hopes that I can still be caught up.

What’s in your way?

I’ve been having a few issues on prioritizing stuff, especially since I’ve been having quite a few personal things going on (like my sister getting married!) so there’s a lot of things happening soon in my personal life that I have to prioritize my work a bit more tightly.

What will you do next week?

I have to finish collatz and I also have an AI project that I have to finish as…

Week of January 25th — 31st

What did you do this past week?

This past week, I did a lot of planning and working on homework to make sure that I do not overwhelm myself. I mostly spent it working on my planner and making sure that I am not behind schedule.

What’s in your way?

Time is not always on my side because I always have busy weekends so I have to do most schoolwork on the weekdays.

What will you do next week?

Next week, I have to start working on a lot of projects since the week after the next week I have 2 projects due. …

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in the northern part of Mexico and moved into the US just before starting high school.

What high school did you attend?

I attended Westwood High School right here in Austin!

What was your favorite extracurricular activity in high school?

I wasn’t part of the UIL team but I really liked going into the Computer Science UIL meetings and do the exercises sometimes. I was also part of the knitting club.

Why did you come to UT?

Because I heard UT had a really awesome computer science program and I really wanted to get the best education I could get (that was still public and in-state because I’m not made of money).

Why are you majoring in CS?

I really like the grind of…
